New Safety Standards for Pipe Bending Machines: What Manufacturers Need to Know in 2026

Regulatory Update: ISO 16090 & EN 12622

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) have published revised safety requirements for metalworking machine tools, including pipe bending, cutting, and forming equipment. These updates take effect in Q2 2026 and affect both machine builders and end-users worldwide.

Major Changes

  • Enhanced Risk Assessment: Machine manufacturers must now perform and document a comprehensive risk assessment covering all foreseeable misuse scenarios, not just intended operation.
  • Safety Light Curtains: Category 4 / PLe light curtains are now mandatory on hydraulic bending machines with force exceeding 50 kN, replacing older single-beam safety devices.
  • Emergency Stop Response: Maximum permissible stopping time reduced from 500ms to 300ms for servo-driven machines, requiring faster braking systems.
  • Cybersecurity Provisions: CNC machines with network connectivity must include access control, firmware integrity verification, and encrypted communication protocols — a first for pipe processing equipment standards.

Impact on Buyers

Manufacturers purchasing new equipment should verify CE declarations reference the 2026 editions of these standards. Existing machines in operation may require safety retrofits to maintain compliance during scheduled inspections.

At Stanch Machinery, all current-production CNC machines already meet the forthcoming 2026 safety requirements, including PLe-rated safety systems, sub-300ms emergency stop, and network security features.
